The woman behind the words
I started writing because I needed somewhere to put it all. The long nights, the proud moments, the particular loneliness of a life built around someone else's schedule. This is that place.
My husband got his ATP certificate on a Tuesday in October. By Friday he was gone for four days. I remember standing in the kitchen that first evening, the house completely quiet, thinking: nobody told me about this part.
I started writing — just for myself, at first. Notes in a journal about what it actually felt like. The pride and the loneliness existing in the same breath. The way you learn to hold plans loosely. The small rituals you build to make the absences feel less like absences.
Eventually I started sharing it. And the responses I got back — from women all over the country, all over the world — told me I wasn't alone in any of it. That's when this became something more than a journal.
Diary of a Pilot's Wife exists for the women who are figuring out this life in real time. The ones who are proud of their partners and also exhausted. The ones who've mastered the solo bedtime routine and still cry sometimes in the driveway. The ones who want honest company, not just reassurance.
This isn't a highlight reel. The hard parts are here alongside the beautiful ones, because that's what's actually useful.
The best thing about this life is the women you find in it. This space is built to help you find them.
You deserve a full life that doesn't pause when he's away. Everything here is written with that in mind.
The forum and the newsletter exist because one voice — mine — isn't enough. The wisdom in this community belongs to all of you: the women who've been doing this for twenty years and the ones who are three weeks in and still figuring out the schedule app. Come as you are. Ask the questions you're embarrassed to ask anywhere else. You'll find people here who already know the answer.
"He left at 4am. I made coffee for one. And then I wrote about it."
